Manchester by the Sea depicts bittersweet moments | Daily Trojan

i don't typically write full, complete reviews for movies or books alike. sure, i like sharing my thoughts and opinions on movies and books, but i like to just throw those out in a haphazard and casual fashion. in fact, i'm not even certain that this review will come out with a clear beginning, middle, and end. but this movie, with its powerful message and stunning acting, deserves its own review rather than a review grouped in one short post with other films.

genre: drama

starring: casey affleck, michelle williams, kyle chandler, lucas hedges

movie review // a complete ranking of the ocean's films

BEHIND THE CAMERA: 'Ocean's Eleven' traded Bruce Willis for George ...

the ocean's trilogy is one of the best heist film series in the history of hollywood (don't @ me.) but, like any other movie or book series, certain films within the series overpower others with their brilliance.

here is my ranking of the films within the ocean's trilogy (and the spin-off, ocean's eight.)

this playlist feels like hopelessness.

much like how i'm a mood reader and mood movie watcher, i'm a mood listener. when i listen to music, i don't just hear it. i feel it in my bones. i close my eyes and i feel the music deep within my soul and, more often than not, i will have scenes flash in my mind of what i believe this song could accompany. sometimes i get a glimpse of a group of people dancing a certain way. sometimes i experience a scene of utter despair. other times i can see a girl sitting on a train looking out the window.

a lot of times, i like to pick songs to listen to at any given moment based on the type of feeling i want the music to give me. i don't know if i'm the only person that experiences music in such a way, but a large part of me believes that i cannot be alone in this. as such, i thought i would begin a little mini series on my blog where i share certain musical playlists dedicated to making the listener feel "some typa way", as the youngins call it nowadays.

these songs may not have lyrics that align with the main mood that i'm categorizing it as, but it's more the feel of the song that really gets it onto my list.

here are eleven songs that will make you feel like you're dearly missing something in your life, but you don't yet know what it is:

ranking every ariana grande album

for those of you who don't know, i'm a major ariana grande stan. i love her so much.

i also love music. so i thought... por que no los dos?

something weird i've noticed about myself and my album favorites is that, while some albums may have more songs that i enjoy, other albums may have fewer songs that i enjoy but that i enjoy more. for example, album A has 15 songs and i like 13 of them. album B has 15 songs and i like 10 of them. but, i love the songs from album B so much more. this is exactly how i feel when i think of ranking ariana grande's entire discography. and this is also what makes choosing a favorite so much more difficult. however, i've decided that i shall name the album with my more preferred songs to be my favorite, rather than the album of which i'm familiar with more songs.

a comprehensive list of all my book boyfriends

i don't know if i'm the only one like this, but a major determining factor in my enjoyment of a novel is how much i fall in love with the main male love interest. i never typically enjoyed books that don't have any romance whatsoever, however in the last few months i've learned that i actually prefer no romance to bad romance any day (more on that in another future post.)

because of how drawn i am to literary romances and how deeply i fall in love with these characters, i decided to share a complete list of every single book boyfriend i've ever had and rank them from favorite to least favorite. this list only consists of characters that i've truly loved or swooned over, so the ones that just weren't it for me won't be here (*ahem* peter k., for instance.) i also have not yet read some other popular series, such as the dark artifices and an ember in the ashes, which i'm sure i definitely would have added if i'd read them. hope ya'll enjoy and swoon along with me :-)

movie summary:

the devil wears prada, starring anne hathaway, meryl streep, and emily blunt, is a 2006 comedy/drama centered around andy, a woman who dreams of becoming a successful journalist but has struggled to make progress towards that goal following her college graduation. after applying for job after job, she finally gets hired for one position: the second assistant of a major fashion magazine editor who has little patience and great expectations for her employees. andy experiences many struggles while working under miranda priestly, meryl streep's character, but tries to hold on as long as she can because she knows that working under such a high-profile personality will open up doors that allow her to finally achieve her lifelong goal. all the while, andy experiences disapproval from her friends regarding her work position and dislike andy's growing sense of fashion, and she must decide how to please everyone in her life while remaining true to herself.

there were two possible directions for this movie to go, and it went in the opposite direction from the one i had hoped.
