a comprehensive list of all my book boyfriends

i don't know if i'm the only one like this, but a major determining factor in my enjoyment of a novel is how much i fall in love with the main male love interest. i never typically enjoyed books that don't have any romance whatsoever, however in the last few months i've learned that i actually prefer no romance to bad romance any day (more on that in another future post.)

because of how drawn i am to literary romances and how deeply i fall in love with these characters, i decided to share a complete list of every single book boyfriend i've ever had and rank them from favorite to least favorite. this list only consists of characters that i've truly loved or swooned over, so the ones that just weren't it for me won't be here (*ahem* peter k., for instance.) i also have not yet read some other popular series, such as the dark artifices and an ember in the ashes, which i'm sure i definitely would have added if i'd read them. hope ya'll enjoy and swoon along with me :-)

**note: the italicized names are my old favorites from stories that i cannot even try to remember; all i remember is how much middle-school-me was in love with them so i just included them on the list anyway! without further ado, let's get into the list of love ;)

1) rhysand  a court of mist and fury

  • my. HUSBAND. rhys is seriously my favorite book character of all time and nobody will ever be able to convince me otherwise. he's just so great and perfectly fits into my little equation of the ideal male love interest: a bad guy at first, but as you learn more of his background, you understand why he is how he is. then, you learn that he really has his reasons and has, instead, been making sacrifices for the good of his people.

2) will herondale  infernal devices

  • my original book husband. i first read the infernal devices back in middle school, and i loved will with my whole heart. a little over a year ago, i reread the entire series, and my love for him was renewed. he, again, has his reasons for being cruel and rude. but seriously, what is it with black-haired and blue/violet-eyed males that hurt me so???

3) atlas  it ends with us

  • the first contemporary book boyfriend of this list. his situation is more of a unique one among those others in this list. i won't write too much for fear of giving too much away if you have not yet read this story, but it's a must-read. i also have a review of this novel on my page, but it has spoilers so tread with caution!

4) four / tobias eaton ⭒ divergent

  • i don't think this needs much of an explanation, but man tobias eaton you are amazing. again, i love that he was that broody character that becomes soft. (i think i have a type...)

5) andrius arvydas  between shades of gray

  • this book. this man. this novel is so heartbreaking and, veering from my typical bad-boy-to-lovers favorites, this man and lina had a friendship that became so much more in a time when companionship was so important. please read this book if you haven't; i didn't think i would like this book as much as i did.

6) chaol  throne of glass

  • to be completely fair, i only read the first few books of throne of glass and have yet to complete the series. BUT, i was completely head-over-heels in love with chaol for the first two novels. i don't care what other people say or how horrible i hear he becomes later on -- he will forever be books 1 and 2 chaol in my eyes.

7) tucker  unearthly

8) kaidan  sweet evil

9) owen  broken beautiful hearts

10) xander  the chaos of standing still

       cutie

11) AJ  every last word

      another cutie

12) peeta mellark  the hunger games

  • man oh man i was obsessed with the hunger games back when they were poppin'. i was soooo in love with the character peeta that when the movie was announced, i became obsessed with josh hutcherson. so much so that, in 7th grade science class where we chose a random celebrity to "have a child" (combine genetic traits) with, you best know i chose josh hutcherson right then and there.

13) rowan  throne of glass

14) warner  shatter me

15) thomas  stalking jack the ripper

what a charismatic, flirty, hunk of a man

16) ash  the iron king

      i definitely have a thing for enemies-to-lovers

17) hayden  the fill-in boyfriend

18) ian  the host

19) ethan  tell me three things

20) dimitri  vampire academy

21) patches  hush, hush

22) matthias  six of crows

23) prince kai  cinder

24) jace  mortal instruments

he cute but he's not my baby will herondale

25) trevor  pivot point

26) adrian  vampire academy / bloodlines

27) alex  delirium

28) duval  grave mercy

29) ky  matched

30) elder  across the universe

31) the darkling  shadow and bone

  • yes..... i was a darkling fan the first time i read the shadow and bone series. BUT, i quickly changed my mind the second time i read the series.

honorable mentions:

dax  by your side
nate  one of us is lying
kell  a darker shade of magic
xander  the distance between us
lennon  starry eyes
west  until friday night
day  legend
liam  the darkest minds
jack  the anatomical shape of a heart
tristan  archers of avalon

wow. see, i knew i had a lot of book boyfriends but listing them out this way kind of freaks me out a little bit.

after scrolling through this list, i've realized that most of my book boyfriends are oldies in that they're from books i read way back when.

three possibilities:

1) i read more books back then than i do now

2) my opinion of these characters, since i have not reread these books in a long time, continues to improve as they remain in my mind year after year and i only remember their good moments. i have an inkling that, if i were to reread the majority of the novels that i wrote in italics, i would not love them nearly as much as i do.

3) i was more easily wooed when i was younger and now am much more difficult to impress (another likely possibility)

anyway, if you guys made it this far thank you :) comment down below YOUR favorite book boyfriend; i'd love to hear your opinions. i hope you enjoyed and i'll see you guys next time!

with love,
bay
